Solution

RESPONSIBILITY

I had always hated the position of class monitor. The job required discipline, hard effort, and a degree of maturity and responsibility that seemed beyond my reach. It also needed you to act responsibly and maturely, stay alert at all times, and make informed decisions for the class as a whole.

With the monitor’s position and role come a long list of responsibilities. Some of these duties, which should be handled by a monitor, include maintaining discipline and silence in the class in the teacher’s absence, checking all students’ uniforms, and distributing corrected notebooks and test papers. It involves running to the principal’s office if a particular teacher does not turn up for a class, switching off the lights, failing if the students are not in class, taking care of the cupboard keys, and managing the stationery. It requires constant vigilance and regular attention to keep the classroom clean, update the notice boards, and make all the relevant announcements.

Given this long list of duties, I was apprehensive that I wouldn’t make a good monitor. I thought I might not be able to control the class or do multi-tasking. But my opinion changed last month when my class teacher made me the monitor! I couldn’t say no to her, and all my friends encouraged me by assuring me that I would make an efficient and good monitor whom everyone would listen to.

On the first day of my duty, I was scared and nervous. I collected everyone’s homework, checked their uniforms, and helped maintain silence when the teachers were not in class. Everything was more or less in order. This was when I realized that everything was under control and that being a monitor wasn’t really as bad as I had imagined. My class teacher was really proud of the way I was handling things. I was learning and improving each day.

At the end of the month, I thought about the experience as a whole. The role I had once dreaded became a source of pride and growth. Even my parents observed a newfound patience, responsibility, and wisdom in me. The experience taught me that sometimes, the responsibilities we avoid are the ones that shape us the most, turning apprehension into capability and fear into confidence. This really was a life-changing experience for me.
