Question
Name the products formed when dilute HNO3 is added to copper.

Solution
When diluted nitric acid is applied to copper, copper nitrate, water, and the colourless gas nitrogen monoxide are generated.
\[\ce{3Cu + 8HNO3 {(dil.)} -> \underset{Copper nitrate}{3Cu(NO3)2} + 4H2O + 2NO-}\]
Nitrogen monoxide then combines with air, producing reddish-brown emissions of nitrogen dioxide.
\[\ce{2NO + O2 -> \underset{Nitrogen dioxide}{2NO2}}\]
