Solution
- Surgical removal: Cutting out the growth at the primary site together with adjacent tissues and local lymph glands. This is commonly done for cancers in breasts, bowel, lungs, kidneys, testes, womb, ovaries, bones, and skin (but not usually possible for brain cancer).
- Radiotherapy: Use of X-rays and other forms of radiation to destroy cancer cells. It is effective because cancer cells are more susceptible to radiation than normal cells. Radiotherapy may sometimes be the only practical treatment in extensive cases, such as skin or breast cancer.
- Chemotherapy: Use of cytotoxic drugs that target and destroy cancer cells without harming normal cells too much. Examples include drugs derived from Catharanthus roseus like vincristin and vinblastin. Chemotherapy has proven successful in curing some cancers like Hodgkin’s disease, certain leukemias, and some genital cancers.
- Immunotherapy: Use of biological response modifiers such as alpha-interferon to activate the immune system and help destroy tumors.
