- The umpires agree the ball is not fit for play through normal use (excessively worn or damaged); it is replaced with a ball of comparable wear and the umpires inform the batsman and fielding captain.
- The umpires agree the ball’s condition was unfairly changed by the fielding side in which case the batsman chooses the replacement from a selection of six balls of various degrees of use (same brand); if changed by the batting side, the umpires bring in a ball with comparable wear.
