Solution
Pulse and Respiration Before and After Physical Activity
Note: The figures below are illustrative sample observations, not actual measurements. Take your own readings and replace these values before submitting your project.
Method: Record each person’s pulse and breathing rate at rest. After about 10 minutes of a game or sport, record them again as soon as possible. Count pulse beats and breaths for one minute each, using the same method each time.
| Person | Activity | Pulse before (beats/min) | Pulse after (beats/min) | Respiration before (breaths/min) | Respiration after (breaths/min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brisk walking | 72 | 104 | 16 | 23 |
| 2 | Running | 76 | 132 | 17 | 30 |
| 3 | Badminton | 74 | 118 | 16 | 26 |
| 4 | Football | 78 | 140 | 18 | 32 |
| 5 | Cycling | 70 | 112 | 15 | 24 |
| 6 | Basketball | 80 | 136 | 18 | 31 |
| 7 | Skipping | 75 | 128 | 17 | 29 |
| 8 | Volleyball | 73 | 116 | 16 | 25 |
| 9 | Swimming | 77 | 122 | 17 | 27 |
| 10 | Kho-kho | 79 | 134 | 18 | 30 |
Observation: In this sample, both pulse and respiration rates are higher after activity than at rest. During exercise, the body needs more oxygen and energy, so the heart and lungs work faster. Rates generally move back toward resting levels during recovery.
