Solution
In medley relay events, swimmers must perform the four swimming strokes in the following sequence:
- Backstroke: If a backstroke ledge is used at the start, the toes of both feet must touch the end wall or the surface of the touchpad. At that moment, the swimmer’s head must have come above the water’s surface.
- Breaststroke: After the start and after every turn, the swimmer is allowed to take one complete arm stroke back to the legs, and during this stroke, the swimmer may remain underwater.
- Butterfly: Throughout the race, both arms must move together, coming forward at the same time over the water and moving backward simultaneously under the water.
- Freestyle: Freestyle means the swimmer can use any swimming style. However, in individual medley or medley relay events, freestyle refers to any stroke other than backstroke, breaststroke, or butterfly.
