Solution

Lady Weston’s calm practicality contrasts sharply with Lord Weston’s pompousness and panic. When he declares that his life is in danger, she is not overwhelmed; she recalls that his previous alarm followed a meal of game pie and lightly jokes that assassins do not target nobodies. While Weston interprets “Remember Caesar” as a death warrant, Lady Weston first struggles to read the scrawl and then remembers her sister’s birthday. Her common sense is clear when she questions whether the note was really meant for him and points out the absurdity of barricading doors while leaving other openings unsecured. Weston, meanwhile, sees danger in the parcel, the windows and even the ilex tree, and fears that it is an infernal machine. Lady Weston’s humour gently exposes his exaggeration, but she is not uncaring: she brings him wine and biscuits, looks after the household and considers how to protect him. At the end, she recognises the note as his own reminder about Mr. Caesar and knows the parcel is his new cloak. Her composed, observant nature makes Weston’s alarm all the more amusing.
