Solution

Lord Weston repeatedly praises attention to detail, claiming that it is the beginning of greatness. Ironically, he fails to examine the details that would have prevented his own panic. Finding the words “Remember Caesar” on a scrap of paper, he notices the date 15 March and immediately connects it with Julius Caesar’s assassination. He overlooks the simple possibility that the words are a reminder about Mr. Caesar, who is due to visit. He also turns an uncertain description of a man into proof of a conspiracy, then mistakes a parcel containing his new velvet cloak for a bomb. His exaggerated precautions create needless disorder: doors are barricaded, the gardener is sent away, flowers are removed and books are plunged into a pail of water to weigh down the parcel. Lady Weston, whom he dismisses as interested in trivial minutiae, is the one who calmly questions his assumptions and understands the clues. The joke is that Weston’s supposed attention to detail becomes selective and careless: he fixates on alarming details while ignoring their ordinary explanations. His own warning about detail thus ironically leads him into trouble.
