Solution

Given: 5x – 1 = 9 and 3y + 1 = y – 5.

Step-wise calculation:

1. Solve for x:

5x – 1 = 9

5x = 9 + 1

5x = 10

x = `10/5`

x = 2

2. Solve for y:

3y + 1 = y – 5

3y – y = –5 – 1

2y = –6

y = `-6/2`

y = –3

The coordinates of the point are (2, –3).
