Solution
An oil spill is caused when petroleum products are released into the environment, most commonly when oil leaks or is discharged from human sources such as waste oil and lubricants from service stations or from tankers and offshore oil wells, allowing the oil to seep into rivers, seas, and oceans. Once released, the oil spreads over the water surface and can form an insulating layer that prevents oxygen exchange with the atmosphere, leading to serious harm to fish, bird,s and other marine life.
