Solution

The story presents respect for parents as an important Indian family value. Rakesh touches his father’s feet after achieving success and again when he returns from the USA. He brings his father tea, reads him the newspaper and attends to his needs. His care for his mother during her final illness is also described as an act that brings her comfort and pride. The story additionally shows the close ties within the neighbourhood. When Rakesh succeeds, people visit the family to congratulate his parents and join their celebration. Bhatia, the neighbour, regularly talks with Varma and listens to his worries, showing concern for an elderly man beyond his own household. At the same time, the story asks readers to consider what respect truly means. Rakesh’s medical care is motivated by concern, but his strict control over his father’s food and routine leaves Varma feeling unheard. In my view, the story values family duty and community support, while reminding us that respect must include patience, compassion and attention to an older person’s wishes.
