Question

How do you get ideal gas equation from the gas laws?

Short Answer

Solution

According to Boyle’s law,

V ∝ `1/P`

According to Charles’ law,

V ∝ T

According to Avogadro’s law,

V ∝ n

Combining all three:

V ∝ `(n T)/P`

∴ PV ∝ nT

Introducing the proportionality constant R,

PV = nRT

This is called the ideal gas equation, where P is pressure, V is volume, n is the number of moles, R is the universal gas constant, and T is absolute temperature.
