Question
How are homozygous lines produced from anther cultures?
Short Answer

Solution
Anthers from suitable plants, commonly F1 hybrids, are cultured so their haploid pollen cells develop into haploid plants. The chromosome number of these plants is doubled, usually with colchicine. The resulting fertile plants are homozygous for their genes and can provide pure lines much faster than repeated selfing.
