Solution

When someone is going through a hard time, they don’t necessarily need a ‘fixer’; they need a friend. Here is how you can effectively support someone:

  • Listen Without Judgment: Often, the most powerful thing you can do is simply listen. Allow them to express their feelings without jumping in with advice or telling them to ‘just get over it.’
  • Practice Empathy: Show them that you understand their feelings. A simple ‘I can see why that’s upsetting, and I’m here for you’ can make someone feel much less alone.
  • Offer Practical Help: During tough times, daily tasks can feel overwhelming. Help them with small things like sharing study notes, helping with a project, or just bringing them a snack. These small acts show you truly care.
  • Know Your Limits: You don’t have to carry their burden alone. If a problem seems too serious or overwhelming, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult, such as a teacher or a counsellor. Helping them find the right support is a sign of true friendship.
  • Stay Consistent: A quick text or a friendly greeting in the hallway lets them know they haven’t been forgotten. Knowing that someone is consistently in their corner makes a world of difference.
