Solution

Aerobic respiration is impossible when there is a lack of oxygen in the environment.

  1. In such circumstances, higher plants transition to anaerobic respiration to survive.
  2. In some animal tissues, in the absence of oxygen, cells undergo anaerobic respiration; for example, lactic acid fermentation happens in muscle cells during severe physical exercise.
