To survive, these trees form specialised tangled networks of pneumatophores (breathing roots) that grow vertically against gravity, breaking through the mud and water into the open air to receive oxygen directly from the atmosphere during low tide.
- Trapping Silt and Debris: The complex, dense grid of tangled roots serves as a natural sieve. It slows down the speed of incoming tidal water, causing it to dump sediment.
