उत्तर
- Anchorage in Soft, Muddy Soil: Delta regions are made up of soft, loose, and moving silt brought in by rivers. Tangled stilt roots arch outward from the tree trunks and sink deep into the mud over a large area, serving as anchor cables that keep the trees stable and prevent them from being uprooted by heavy ocean waves and daily high tides.
- Adaptation to Oxygen Deprivation (Breathing): The waterlogged clayey soil in river deltas has no oxygen. To survive, these trees form specialised tangled networks of pneumatophores (breathing roots) that grow vertically against gravity, breaking through the mud and water into the open air to receive oxygen directly from the atmosphere during low tide.
- Trapping Silt and Debris: The complex, dense grid of tangled roots serves as a natural sieve. It slows down the speed of incoming tidal water, causing it to dump sediment. This process helps to deposit silt, stabilises the shoreline, and gradually creates additional landmass in the deltaic ecosystem.
