Solution
The reaction of aluminium with HCl is slow in the beginning because aluminium has a thin, protective layer of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) on its surface. This layer prevents HCl from coming into direct contact with aluminium initially. Once the oxide layer dissolves, the reaction becomes faster.
