Solution

The immune system’s functional units are lymphocytes, which have two primary ways of expressing their unique activity. First, when a certain antigen is recognized, specific cell types respond by producing antibodies. The humoral immune response is the defense mechanism driven by antibodies, which attach to antigens to encourage antigen elimination through a number of “mechanisms.” Second, certain lymphocytes are triggered by antigens to generate a response in which macrophages and lymphocytes work together to directly destroy infectious organisms rather than producing circulating antibodies. The cellular immune response is the name given to this defense mechanism. A single pathogen frequently triggers both humoral and cellular immune responses at the same time, even though they can happen independently.
