Solution

When one bar magnet is brought near the freely hanging bar magnet, we observe that the hanging magnet either moves towards the other magnet or moves away from it, depending on which poles are facing each other.

  1. When the north pole is brought near the south pole, the two magnets attract each other.
  2. When the south pole is brought near the north pole, they also attract each other.
  3. When the north pole is brought near another north pole, the magnets repel each other.
  4. When the south pole is brought near another south pole, the magnets also repel each other.
