• Total Number: There are approximately 2,049 active RUPPs registered under the ECI.
• Context: RUPPs represent the largest chunk of political parties in India. They include newly registered parties that haven’t contested an election yet or active parties that did not secure enough voting percentage or seats during the assembly or general elections to earn state or national recognition.
• Recent System Clean-up: The ECI actively monitors theseparties. Over the last few years, the commission has conducted large-scale cleanup drives to delist hundreds of non-compliant, inactive, or untraceable RUPPs that haven’t contested any elections for six consecutive years or failed to file their financial audit reports. This has brought the net total down from over 2,800 parties.
