Read the following story and do the exercises that follow.
Last night somebody broke into our neighbor’s house. He stole everything he found. The neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Umar, saw him while he was running away but they couldn’t catch him. This morning an inspector arrived to make an inquiry.
The Inspector posed certain questions to Mr. Umar.

Here, we see that the ‘-ing’ form of the verb ‘fight’ is used as a subject in ‘The fighting went on’. It does the work of a noun. When the ‘-ing’ form of a verb is used as a noun, it is known as a gerund or verbal noun. Read the following examples of gerunds:

How do we decide whether a clause is a noun clause, an adjective clause or an adverb clause? There is a simple rule - we can replace an adverb clause with an adverb, an adjective clause with an adjective and a noun clause with a noun.
