Solution

  1. Knock-out Tournament: In this tournament, a team that loses once is automatically eliminated and will not be able to play again. The tournament will have a total of n − 1 matches, which is the number of participating teams minus one. For example, if 12 teams compete, the total number of matches is 12 − 1 = 11.
  2. League Tournament: In this tournament, each side will play one match against each other. The total number of matches in a single league tournament should equal `(n(n-1))/2` e.g., if 10 teams are competing, the total number of matches to be played shall be:
    `(n(n-1))/2 = (10(10-1))/2 = (10(9))/2 = 90/2` = 45 Matches
(Small ‘n’ stands for total number of teams participating in the tournament.)
  3. Combination Tournament: This type of tournament usually takes place when a large number of teams from different locations compete in a specific game. Teams in the same group compete for the title of champion through knockout or league play.
  4. Challenge Tournament: There are two types of challenge tournaments:
    1. The Ladder Tournament.
    2. The Pyramid Tournament. Challenge tournaments typically involve single and dual games, such as badminton and tennis.
    3. Tournaments can be held for any duration without a set timetable. Players construct their own arrangements and play matches with each other.
