The energy of the chlorophyll molecule is used in splitting the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen. Four electrons are also liberated. This is called photolysis of water. The process is:
\[\ce{4H2O -> 4OH- + 4H+}\]
\[\ce{4OH- -> 2H2O + O2 + 4e-}\]
