Kwashiorkor is a type of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) caused mainly due to a severe deficiency of protein in the diet. It commonly affects young children. It is characterised by swelling of the body (oedema), growth failure, muscle wasting, changes in hair and skin, and weakness. It can be prevented by providing a protein-rich, balanced diet, proper child-feeding practices and timely healthcare.
