Questions
Explain the term copolymers with examples.
What are copolymers?

Solution 1
- The polymers which have two or more types of repeating units are called copolymers.
- They are formed by the polymerization of two or more different types of monomers in presence of each other.
- The different monomer units are randomly sequenced in the copolymer.
e.g. Buna-S, Buna-N
Solution 2
- When two or more different types of monomers undergo polymerisation, the process is called copolymerisation, and the polymer thus formed is called a copolymer.
- Each monomer used in the same chain is present in many units that make up the copolymer.
- Its composition is determined by the reactivity of the monomers as well as their proportion.
- Compared to homopolymers made from each of the combining monomers, copolymers have very distinct properties. These polymers include styrene-butadiene rubber, styrene methylmethacrylate, and others.
