The Marathas opposed European colonialism for several reasons:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj understood the hidden intentions of the foreign powers and actively resisted their entry.
- He took strong steps like establishing a navy and constructing forts to counter foreign influence.
- To disrupt the British salt trade, he imposed zakat on it, showcasing his firm opposition to colonial powers.
- Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj also fought bravely against the Portuguese, and later, Chimaji Appa, the brother of Peshwa Bajirao I, defeated the Portuguese at Vasai.
- Among Indian powers, the Marathas stood out as the only force that successfully defeated a European colonial power in such a manner.
