A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon caused by overstress or overuse. It may involve stretching, tearing or ripping of the muscle or tendon. Strains are common among sportspersons and may range from simple to severe injuries. A strain may occur due to a sudden or forceful movement of a muscle.

Examples: A football player may suffer a strain in the hamstrings, quadriceps or calf muscles. A baseball player may suffer a strain in the throwing arm. A sprinter may also strain a muscle while forcefully leaving the starting blocks.
