Question
Do you know about hormonal imbalance? What are the symptoms you look to know that a person is suffering from hormonal imbalance? Both you and your friend decided to ask a medical practitioner of what exactly happens if one does not take care of it?
Visit your known practitioner and learn the consequence of such effects on human body. Then, with the help of your friend prepare a demonstration to make your friends aware of this. You can use visuals, charts, PPT presentation and handouts.

Solution
Hormonal imbalance happens when an endocrine gland makes too much of a hormone (hypersecretion) or too little (hyposecretion).
Symptoms of hormonal imbalance
- Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
- Tiredness and weakness all the time
- Mood swings, anxiety or irritability
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Acne, dry skin, or hair thinning or hair loss
- Frequent urination and excessive thirst
- Too much sweating, or feeling unable to bear heat or cold
- Swelling in the neck (goitre)
- Unusually fast or slow growth in children
- Trouble sleeping
What happens if it is not treated:
| Hormone/Gland | Hyposecretion (too little) | Hypersecretion (too much) |
|---|---|---|
| Growth hormone (Pituitary) | Dwarfism | Gigantism in children; acromegaly in adults |
| Thyroxine (Thyroid) | Cretinism in children; myxoedema in adults; goitre | Exophthalmic goitre (Graves' disease): bulging eyes, fast heartbeat, weight loss |
| Insulin (Pancreas) | Diabetes mellitus: high blood sugar, damage to kidneys, eyes and nerves | Hypoglycaemia: low blood sugar, fainting |
| ADH (Posterior pituitary) | Diabetes insipidus: a lot of dilute urine and dehydration | Water retention |
| Cortisol (Adrenal cortex) | Addison's disease: weakness, low blood pressure | Cushing's syndrome: obesity, high blood pressure |
| Sex hormones (Gonads) | Delayed puberty, infertility | Early puberty, PCOS in females |
Plan for the demonstration:
- Interview: With your friend, visit a doctor. Ask about common hormonal disorders, their causes, warning signs, treatment and prevention.
- Chart or visuals: Draw a labelled diagram of the endocrine glands. Next to each gland, write its hormone and the disorder it causes.
- PPT (6–8 slides): Introduction → endocrine glands → symptoms → disorders table → consequences → prevention → summary.
- Handout: A one-page leaflet listing warning signs and when to see a doctor.
- Awareness message:
- Eat a balanced diet and use iodised salt.
- Exercise regularly and sleep well.
- Manage stress.
- Go for regular health check-ups.
- Do not take hormone medicines without a doctor's prescription.
Conclusion: If hormonal imbalance is ignored, it can affect growth, metabolism, reproduction and mental health. If it is found early, most hormonal disorders can be controlled with medicine and lifestyle changes.
