Solution

Features of Different Types of Rural Settlements:

  • Clustered or Compact Settlements: These consist of a closely built-in area of houses with no separating spaces, where the living area is distinctly separated from the surrounding fields. They are highly common across the fertile alluvial plains of North India.
  • Semi-Clustered or Fragmented Settlements: These are formed either by the fragmentation of a large village or by social segregation, in which the dominant caste occupies the centre of the village while lower castes are forced to live on the outer fringes. They are widely found in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • Hamleted Settlements: In this type, the village is physically divided into several smaller, separated units locally called Panna, Para, Palli, Nagla, or Dhani, which all share one common village name. These are frequently observed in the middle and lower Ganga plains.
  • Dispersed or Isolated Settlements: These appear as isolated huts or tiny hamlets scattered across vast spaces due to rugged terrain. They are commonly found in remote jungles and hilly tracts of Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh.
