Solution
Desert regions are characterised by aridity, which is a lack of water, hence scanty vegetation, which is xerophytic in nature. The main factor shaping settlement patterns in the desert is the availability of water. In Rajasthan, India, there tend to be clustered settlements around oases and other areas with water availability. Since these are the only regions where water is available, settlement around water sources becomes clustered and is the main driver of habitation.
