Question

Discuss the effect of temperature on the adsorption of gases on solids.

Short Answer

Solution

Adsorption is generally exothermic; hence, increasing temperature decreases adsorption. In physical adsorption, a rise in temperature weakens van der Waals forces, lowering adsorption. For chemical adsorption, it first increases with temperature due to activation energy requirements, then decreases at higher temperatures as desorption dominates. Thus, the effect of temperature depends on the type of adsorption.
