Definition Primary sex organs are the gonads that produce gametes and secrete sex hormones. Secondary sex organs are reproductive organs associated with the gonads that do not produce gametes or secrete sex hormones.
Gamete production Primary sex organs produce the male or female gametes. Secondary sex organs do not produce gametes.
Hormone secretion Primary sex organs secrete sex hormones. Secondary sex organs do not secrete the sex hormones described in the syllabus.
Examples in males The testes are the primary sex organs in males. The seminal vesicles, prostate gland, Cowper’s glands, and reproductive ducts are examples of male secondary sex organs.
Examples in females The ovaries are the primary sex organs in females. The fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina are examples of female secondary sex organs.
