• Zamindars frequently set up local markets (haats) where peasants could sell their agricultural produce.
• Some zamindaris grew larger through conquest or grants from the empire, allowing people from lower castes to rise to the position of zamindars.
• Although their role was often exploitative, zamindars maintained mutual relationships with peasants by offering protection and support in a paternalistic manner.
