Dominant refers to the characteristic or allele that appears in the first filial generation (F₁) when two contrasting traits are crossed. In a pair of allelomorphic characters, the one that expresses itself and masks the presence of the other (recessive) character is called dominant. The phenomenon by which this dominant character is expressed over the recessive is known as dominance.
