A homologous series is a group or family of structurally similar organic compounds that share the same functional group, exhibit similar chemical characteristics, and show a regular gradation in physical properties. Each successive member of the series differs from the preceding one by a -CH2- group or a molecular mass of 14 amu.

Example (Alkanes series): Methane (CH4), Ethane (C2H6), Propane (C3H8).
