Corresponding sides of two similar triangles are in the ratio 2 : 3. If the area of the smaller triangle is 48 cm2, then the area of the larger triangle is 108 cm2.

Explanation:

The ratio of areas of similar triangles equals the square of the ratio of corresponding sides, so `("Area smaller")/("Area larger") = (2/3)^2 = 4/9`. 

Thus `48/("Area larger") = 4/9` 

⇒ Area larger = `(48 xx 9)/4`

= 108 cm2
