The cover pages of the Std. XI and Std. XII Geography textbooks show noticeable changes in land use and land cover. In some areas, natural vegetation and open land have reduced, while buildings, roads, industries and other human-made structures have increased. Agricultural land may also have been converted into residential or commercial areas. These changes mainly occur due to population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and development of transport facilities. Thus, land cover changes from natural or agricultural use to more built-up and urban land use over time.
