1. The CJI led a group of senior Supreme Court justices that proposed candidates for appointment as Supreme Court judges to the President.
2. Prior to recommending any course of action to the President of India, the Chief Justice of India had a duty to meet with the four most senior judges of the Supreme Court.
3. This allowed a college of people (judges) to select judges and became known as the Collegium System.
