Direction and Location Blow from the Sub-tropical High Pressure Belt to the Equatorial Low Pressure Belt between 30°N and 30°S latitudes. Northeast Trades in the Northern Hemisphere, Southeast Trades in the Southern Hemisphere. Blow from the Sub-tropical High Pressure Belt to the Sub-polar Low Pressure Belt between 30° and 60° latitudes. Southwesterlies in the Northern Hemisphere, Northwesterlies in the Southern Hemisphere.
Consistency Regular and steady in strength and direction. Less constant in direction and strength due to frequent cyclones and anticyclones.
Effect on Continental Rainfall Bring heavy rainfall to the eastern coasts of tropical continents; western coasts remain dry. Bring rainfall mainly to the western coasts of continents; eastern coasts tend to be drier.
