Motivation is the process that initiates, directs, and sustains an individual’s efforts to achieve specific goals. It acts as a driving force that encourages a person to work with enthusiasm. In an organisational context, motivation inspires employees to strive towards organisational objectives by activating their psychological needs such as achievement, power, recognition, appreciation, and belonging.

The motivation process starts with an unmet need or desire within an individual, which creates internal tension. To reduce this tension, the individual seeks appropriate ways to satisfy the need. The actions taken may result in rewards or incentives, further encouraging goal achievement that aligns with organisational objectives. Once the goals are attained, satisfaction is experienced, restoring balance and reducing the initial tension. Over time, a new need may arise, and the motivation cycle begins again.
