The narrator worked as a junior assistant clerk whose duty was to deliver summons. One day, he was sent to serve a summons to a man named Oliver Lutkins. When he reached New Mullion, a delivery-man offered to help him find Lutkins for two dollars per hour.

The delivery-man warned him that Lutkin’s mother was very strict and hot-tempered. He described her as a big, strong woman with a fierce nature. He said she was quick like a cat, talked a lot, and was both tall and heavy. According to him, Lutkins was probably hiding behind his mother for protection.

When Lutkins’ mother found out that they had come to deliver a summons to her son, she became very angry. She picked up an iron rod and came towards them. She even threatened to burn them if they did not leave immediately.
