Explain entrepreneurship development programme.

Entrepreneurship is a process of setting up a new business organisation. It is a process wherein a person decides to build a career in business by finding the market options and mobilizing the available resources. The process of entrepreneurship development can be done by: Training and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP).

EDP is defined as,

“a programme designed to help a person in strengthening his entrepreneurial motive and in acquiring skills and capabilities necessary for playing his entrepreneurial role efficiently”.

EDP is a program through which:

1. People with entrepreneurial traits are identified. 
2. They are motivated to take up new industrial venture.
3. They are trained in managing the unit. 
4. They are guided in all aspects of starting a venture.

EDP was first introduced in Gujarat in 1970. It was sponsored by the Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation (GIIC). The EDPs are based on McClelland’s experiments in Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. In this experiment, businessmen were provided with motivation and training.

The EDP includes the following steps:

1. Arrangement of infrastructure
2. Selection of potential entrepreneur 
3. Identification of enterprise 
4. Actual training program 
5. Selection of training personnel 
6. Selection of method of training 
7. Actual training
8. Monitoring and follow-ups

The following are the objectives of EDP:

1. Generation of employment opportunities. 
2. Optimum use of available resources. 
3. Development of backward regions. 
4. Widening base for small and medium scale industries. 
5. Improving economic status of socially disadvantaged groups.
6. Nurture and develop (foster) entrepreneurial growth.
