The evening seemed to mourn the dying century. Frost had turned the fields grey, and the tangled branches looked like broken strings against the sky. I felt that the world had grown old and empty. Then, from a frail thrush, came a sudden, full-hearted song. Its joy seemed strangely out of place, yet it stirred something in me. Perhaps the bird knew of a hope I could not see. I cannot share its certainty, but its song has softened my despair and reminded me that life may begin again even in the darkest season.
