During British colonial rule, village life in India changed greatly. The British introduced new land revenue systems and imposed heavy taxes on farmers and landowners. Many peasants struggled to pay these taxes and were forced to borrow money, which pushed them into debt and poverty. Traditional village systems and local leaders also lost some of their power as the British introduced their own laws and administration. Farmers were sometimes encouraged or forced to grow cash crops such as indigo and cotton instead of food crops.

Some effects of colonial rule can still be seen today. Many rural areas continue to face problems such as farmer debt, unequal land ownership, poor irrigation, and dependence on agriculture. Some traditional village practices have also changed because of modern laws, education, and technology. Thus, colonial policies had a long-lasting influence on Indian village life.
