Solution

  1. Spirogyra is a green alga belonging to the Thallophyta group of plants. It is commonly found in fresh water, such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams.
  2. It can survive only in water. The body of Spirogyra is long, thin, and filamentous, like a thread. It is made up of many cells joined end to end, forming an unbranched filament.
  3. Each cell contains chlorophyll, which allows the plant to perform photosynthesis and prepare its own food.
  4. A unique feature of Spirogyra is its spiral-shaped chloroplasts, which run along the length of the cell.
  5. Within these spiral chloroplasts are small, dot-like structures called pyrenoids, which help in the storage of starch. Spirogyra is a multicellular and non-vascular organism.
  6. It reproduces asexually through fragmentation, where the filament breaks into smaller pieces, and each piece grows into a new organism.
