Humayun had to leave India because he was young, inexperienced and faced hostile rivals. Sher Khan (Sher Shah Suri) defeated him decisively at Chausa (1539) and Kannauj (1540), destroying the Mughal army; his brother seized Agra, rendering Humayun homeless and forcing him to flee to Kabul and seek refuge elsewhere.
