Solution

India became independent in 1947. India has multiple problems from the start. Underdevelopment, poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, hunger, malnutrition, food shortages, and so on are all problems. To address all of these issues, India resolved to expand its economy through modernization (e.g., large-scale enterprises, dams), self-reliance, the Planning Commission, and other measures. The agriculture sector has received minimal attention.

The agriculture sector did not receive attention until the 1960s, when India faced a severe food deficit and needed to prioritize it. India, therefore, launched the Green Revolution. It refers to the use of High-Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds, as well as to increased fertilizer and irrigation practices. It was designed to increase production and make India self-sufficient in food grains.

There are both positive and negative effects of the Green Revolution:

  1. Positive effects:
    1. Increased food production
    2. Reduction in famines
    3. Economic growth
    4. Use of modern technology
    5. Development of Agro-based Industries
    6. Employment opportunities
  2. Negative effects:
    1. Regional disparities
    2. Environmental Degradation
    3. Neglect of Non-food Crops
    4. Increased Inequality
    5. Health Hazards
    6. Loss of traditional Farming Practices.
