Solution

In Champaran, the peasants lived in constant fear of the British authorities. Their suffering was caused by the cultivation of indigo and the greed of landlords, who forced them to grow indigo on 15% of their land and hand over the entire produce. When synthetic indigo was introduced, the landlords agreed to free them from this condition but demanded compensation, which the unaware peasants paid. Later, realizing their mistake, they demanded a refund, but the British used force to suppress them.

Gandhiji understood that legal help alone would not solve their problem. The real need was to remove their fear, despite their illiteracy. He led them through non-violence and Satyagraha, inspiring mass support. This movement marked a turning point, as Gandhiji realized India’s strength in united action and began leading the national freedom struggle.
