Solution
The convict tries to give a message to the Bishop and Persome that he is a hard-hearted and cunning person. He is not an innocent fool who can be caught by chaff like a new bird. He had lived in prison or ‘the hell’ for quite a long time. He had learnt all the tricks and cunningness of seasoned criminals. The Bishop’s outwardly soft behaviour and kind gestures can’t trap him in their net.

Idioms are metaphorical expressions rather than literal. For example 'give someone
the willies' does not simply mean 'to handover something called willies to someone',
but 'to make someone feel nervous'. It is important for learners of English to
understand them and be able to use them.
The poet draws conclusions about the family without having met them. He does this in lines such as :

in the weed-choked yard ...
This is a style of English that is very suitable for a poem. But in ordinary speech or writing we use expressions such as :

Another technique adopted by the writer is to use figures of speech such as a simile. A simile is used to express similarity between two things. e.g. He is as fast as lightning. The rain/ell heavily on the metal roof like a machine-gun. Similes usually start with 'like' or 'as'.

Thinking about changes in Reported Speech.
